Frequently Asked Questions

We get asked some pretty interesting questions.  We will do our best to answer them on this page.  If you don't see an answer to your question, please use the "Contact Us" button and sent it to us.

1.  What kind of camera do you use to take the photos on the "Photos" page?

The photos posted on the "Photos 2006" page were taken by a Konica Minolta A2.  The photos on the "Photos 2007" and this years photos were taken with a Nikon D200 with a Nikkor 18-200 mm vibration reduction (VR) lens.

2.  How long can you fly on a tank of fuel?

The Cub has a 12 gallon fuel tank.  The A75-8 engine burns about 4.8 gallons per hour at a cruise speed of 75 mph.  That gives us 2.5 hours of fuel with no reserve.  We plan our flights for less than one hour and 45 minutes.  This leaves about 45 minutes in reserve or 3.6 gallons.

3.  You refer to "we" in your logbook.  Who is with you?

We fly solo most all of the time.  Pilots respond to Air Traffic Control (ATC) with the pronoun "we" even if they are flying alone.   Charles Lindbergh wrote a book about his historic flight titled "WE."  Neither Mr. Lindbergh nor any other pilot we know can explain why.

4.  How long did it take you to fly to Lock Haven in 2006?

It took seven days to fly to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania from Corona, California.  We were grounded for one day due to strong gusty winds in Hinton, Oklahoma.  Here are the rest of the statistics:

   *24 legs

*2,516 statute miles (direct from airport to airport, does not include sight seeing along the way, or deviations from course)

*32 hours and 4 minutes of flight time

   *165.1 gallons of fuel

*78.6 mph, average ground speed (including climb and descents, but I had a tailwind most of the way there.)

5.  What is your primary means of navigation and communication?

We use charts, time and compass backed up by a Garmin 296 GPS.  We have a Icon A23 transceiver strapped to the left leg.  See the August 1, 2006 photo in "Photos 2006."
